I started my Forgotten 14th project tonight, painting up section of Chindits (including a LMG) and a 2" mortar. I decided to mount both the bren gun and 2" mortar of the 45mm wide square bases that I have lying round from the Perry ACW figures mainly for quick recognition
on the table top- easier for my tired old brain to do it that way than
figure out how any men are left when firing the rest of the section (one
of the men in the section acts as the LMG loader in BA). I'm not going to get
into the points of LMGs in Bolt Action arguments except to say they
were a section level support weapon so shall be included in my forces. We will see
how they fare in the game but we may end up adding an extra die when
firing as seems to be a popular house rule with them.
All
the figures are Warlord Games. The figures uniform is a base of Vallejo
Gunship Green and the highlight is Uniform Green. It appears a bit
bright in these shots but looks a lot less harsh to the (my) natural
eye. I'll see how it looks in daylight tomorrow and if it looks to
bright then will touch up the highlights an dull them down a bit.
Craig
Looking good Craig, nice to see the 14th Army getting some action :-)
ReplyDeleteThanks Red Dog- a very interesting conflict. Kohima has recently been voted as Britain's greatest victory- beating the like of Waterloo. Outnumbered 10 to 1 the British (and Indian) held on for two weeks until relieved.
DeleteBeautiful!!! but I don't know how you find the time to paint up so many!!
ReplyDeleteCheers Rodger. Simple really- 3-4 nights of spending 3-4 hrs painting instead of watching TV each week- far more relaxing (and productive- though the TV is usually on as a distraction.
DeleteCool minis. FWIW Craig. I've been using the Lmg in at least two squads in every list since I started playing BA and I don't mind them. Sure they probaby 'cost too much' but @, what, 10 points too much each we are likely talking 20-40 'wasted' points. On the other hand, their range has frequently come in handy as the extra short range often seems to cancel the move penalty. So given that some squads should have them, I just take them in the appropriate units, and apprecciate their benifits on the attack.
ReplyDelete.... We cant all take assault rifles :p
Thanks Jamie. The range things is one of the advantages AFAIK (well in theory anyway). Assault rifles seem to be a popular (and effective) choice for those that can get them. I'm sure there are plenty of things that can be done with the rules to make "effective" lists and I see assault rifles as being a good choice if going down that particular route. Kent and my aim is to try to play appropriate period flavoured lists without going overboard hence my intention to take an "uber" Stuart to face his Chi Ha tank rather than Sherman up when we decide to add tanks.
DeleteI am keen to see how the rules play, the eye candy is stunning and they look like a fun set. I am writing a few scenarios based on the clashes on the Kokoda Track to get things started- it might end up as a FoW style Axis of Attack type campaign.
Very nice looking unit - love the greens. Best, Dean
ReplyDeleteThanks Dean still not 100% sure on the green. Looked at it in the light and the contrast was a bit too bright so think I'll use the base colour (gunship green) lightened with a little buff to do a lighter shade of the original colour.
DeleteVery nice Craig, I think the green isn't too bad at all, esp if you put your jungle with them.
ReplyDeleteAs for bolt action, I wasn't that interested in it per say, until yesterday when I spent 2 hrs watching a video of a small game being played and they actually explained what was happening. Afterwards i was like hmmm that does looking interesting lol. I esp liked the random activation of the units and instantly started thinking about how that could be used in other rules lol.
cheers
Cheers Dave. Noel & Peter seem to be fans of Bolt Action. impetus uses a similar activation sequence except that you bot nominate a command and then roll 2d6 and add your leadership rating to see who goes next. Then repeatwith the next command. I do like the randomness such systems bring to games :)
