300 pt Seljuk's finished

I've spent a couple of evenings working on my 300 pt Seljuk army. I've painted up another 3 stands of light horse and also a Perry Sejuk command. I've decided to go with 4 figures for the medium cavalry nobles/elites as they too have a VBU of 6.

I've tweaked the list from last week, adding another Sujek nobles and more skirmishers/ light foot at the expense of 2x  unts of light horse. Every unit has a missile wepaon.

300 pt Suljek Turks
  • Command: Average (range 60cm)
  • Commander: Poor (+1 leadership)
  • 2x  CM Seljuk Nobles- Comp Bow B
  • 2x CM Ghulums-      Comp Bow C
  • 2x CL Turcomans (VBU 4)- Comp Bow B
  • 2x CL Turcomans- Comp Bow B
  • 1x FL Daylami- Javelins
  • 3x S  Archers- Short Bow B

VBU: 25 Points: 302

The new Seljuk general- painted up tonight.

3x Seljuk light horse painted last Thursday- Perry mini's of course.
 The Cavalry assembled.
3x Stands of Skirmishers and one of Daylami light foot.

Most of the army assembled- I'm missing 2x light horse stands in this shot.

Bring on Kent's Crusaders on Wednesday night

More Syrians

Work continues on the Syrian army. In the past few days I've painted up three bases of Perry Turkomens and rebased my old Glory ones. I much prefer the Perry's but the Old Glory figures aren't too bad so will continue to be used as well.

After my conversations with Jamie last week I decided to go back to my original basing ideas, so the light horse are now based with 3 figures per base and heavier cavalry with 4. Tonight I rebased the Ghulums so there are now four on the base. However, the Syrians will remain with three figures per base to help differentiate them from the heavier Ghulums.

The Turkomans- 6 bases all up.

The Ghulums- 3 bases but eventually this will grow to 6.

I also painted up the Emir's Court which will be used as part of my camp.

I'm hoping to give Kent a game tomorrow night, 400 points. The reconfigured Syrians now have more light horse and the army looks like this:

Command: Average (range 30U)

Command 1 (TVU= 16)
Commander: Fair (+2 leadership)

1x CM Syrian- General
2x CM Ghulum archers
3x CL Turcomans
1x S Archers

Command 2 (TVD= 18)
Commander: Poor (+1 leadership)
1x CM Ghulam Lancers- general
2x CM Syrians
3x CL Turcomans
3x FP Ahdath Militia
2x FL Gaziz

We will see how it fares tomorrow night. It still is pretty fragile due to its Discipline Value but I'm hoping that the Turkomen will be able to use their composite bows to harry the Crusaders knights and reduce them before my heavier cavalry is forced to engage- well that's the theory anyway.

Ideally I'd like to run a third command at at 500 points think I would, grouping all the infantry into one command.

Impetus: Syrians vs First Crusaders

A great game tonight, alas my luck deserted me in the last turn- along with my main commander and his followers.

Kent took to commands:
  • 20 point general (VD = 31)
  • 3 Cp knights
  • 4 CP knights foot
  • 2 crossbow
  • 2 CL turcoploes
  • 2 T Archers
  • 20 point General (VD= 25)
  • 4 CP knights
  • 1CP knight foot
  • 4 Fp infantry
  • 2 cross bow
  • Total point 498
My own commands had a VD of 20 and 17 so I was going to have to destroy a lot of stuff to win this one!

Kent Deploys

The Syrians Deploy

My Syrian cavalry on opportunity.

Kent sends his skirmishers forward.

Turcopoles advance.

Ghulums advance against the Crusader left flank.

The Syrian command advances- with the infantry leading.

The battle lines close.

Crusader knight tries to catch my infantry in the open!

Two Arab lancers take on a crusader knight.

And are quickly dealt with!

Skirmishing continues on my right flank.

Things are getting messy on my left!

Unsupported the crusader general engages the Ghulums.

Ah, some friends turn up to assist him.

But they are driven back- leaving the general unsupported and exposed!

The Crusader general is killed.

And the knight son the other flank are driven back...

Alas in my turn my own casualties are mounting and in fact Kent manages to get my larger command under half strength and so they retreat off the table, with my other command following. So close and yet so far.

Another close game which see-sawed and the result was always in doubt. I was quietly confident in that last turn but Kent massed his firepower and my force melted away.

The dead!

The difference in VD (break point for each command) is quite staggering- 51 pts to 37 so my force is a bit more fragile and I've yet to come to grips with it entirely. I think I need some militia levies to bulk out the force a bit more.

Hopefully I can do better on Friday.

500pt Syrian army completed

I have finished the 500 pt Syrian force, just in time for tomorrow night's game vs Kent. I have to print some banners tomorrow after work but apart from that the force is good to go! I've decided to keep with only two commands. Once I get my Abdath City Militia completed (and add another 100 pts- 4x milita and either 2xGhulums or another 2x Turcomans) I'll add a third command and will probably group all the infantry into one command.

I have a plan to screen the Gaziz (impetuous fanatics) with the javelin armed Kurdish light infantry, but only tomorrow's game will determine if my cunning plan to stop my gaziz charging off into the wild blue yonder will work.

Average Command

Commander: Fair (+2 leadership)

  • 2x CM Ghulam Lancers
  • 2x CM Ghulum Archers
  • 4xCM Bedouin Lancers
  • 2x CL Turcomans
Commander: Fair (+2 leadership)
  • 4x CM Syrians
  • 2x CL Turcomans
  • 2x FL Kurds
  • 2x FL Gaziz
  • 1xS Archers
And now for a few pictures:

The infantry
- Kurdish light infantry and Gaziz.

4x Turcomans

4x Arab Lancers

4x Syrian Medium Cavalry

4x Ghulums

The cavalry arrayed for battle- ranked up like this they look pretty damn impressive!

And a rather basic camp.

Perry Bedouin

Here are the first two stands of my Bedouin lancers for my Syrian army. I decided to do something a bit different to the rest of the army and give them a uniform look- I used an old GW Deadly Nightshade (in the old tall bottles- it's at least 15 years old and still covers well and, unlike the newer paints tend to do, hasn't dried up!!). I highlighted with a colour called periscope from the Vallejo Panzer Aces range.

I was going to do dark green (Vallejo Deep green) or crimson (GW Crimson Gore) turbans but couldn't decide which I preferred and the kids were no help as one preferred green the other red, so I decided I liked both and so would give each figure a different, suitably dark, turban as a contrast. The dark blue robes still give a uniform look but I'm quite pleased with the end result.

Two more stands, and a camp, to finish tomorrow night and I'll have 500 pts ready to take on Kent's Crusaders on Wednesday night in our final game before we head to NATCON on Friday- which should leave Thursday night to tidy up some terrain and make some disordered markers out of the Perry wounded figures.
