I'm not really that interested in the theme, I lived in Japan for 3 years, about 100m from the local castle and enjoyed walking around it in the evenings, or with everal other gaijin occasionally climb the walls while drunk.

Gripping Beast?
Using a selection from the Timurid range?
Musketeer Miniatures
Again, their ghulums are very nice looking figures and could be used for the medium cavalry.
Perry- Arab armies?
Basically morphing my Seljuks & Ghulums- probably not too far off and could run it now using these figures. My current Perry and OG horse archers could be used with these guys.
Some of the Perry Arab range could also fit into the theme with some work.
Steve Barber
These guys look really nice and are sculpted as mongols. My only conern is not having ordered any before whether they would fit with the Perry's size why. Their army deal looks very good value too...
So anyone got any suggestions or experiences with these ranges or other suggestions for who to use for Mongols? Curleys aren't an option too weird looking.
Craig
I think it is 300 points because we are all lazy and dont have anything painted :)
ReplyDeleteHaving to paint outside of the green, brown colour pallet is my main reason for doing a samurai army, that and the Perry figures are very nice.
True, this is starting from scratch too.
DeletePerry Japanese & Samurai do look very, very nice- Perry's are great figures not matter what they do.
I think you should stick with the original joke spacers, idea :p
ReplyDeleteMongols are an awesome army idea - definitely one of THE all time great forces and surprisingly under-represented, now I think about it.
Samurai make an awesome fantasy army though - I saw them in a movie! Pity it was set after 1500..
Hard to resist the guys that ruled most of Asia. Just started re-reading Devil's Horsemen for inspiration. I should have a special rule that allows me to deploy, then move 2 tables left or right and then attack as my opponent is packing up his army!
DeleteI do need some ideas for slogan/signs.
"Space to rent"
"12cm the one true base width. Yeah right."
"Wanted 4 figures to fit this base. Must be well painted"
"I want to be a DBM base when I grow up."
"World domination this way."
"We used to fit on a 6x4 table."
Craig
There's a TAG range, too. IIRC they might be a little big, but worth looking at.
ReplyDeleteI also have a load of unpainted/partpainted Mirliton Steppe Horse Raiders, that I could part with very cheaply, if useful. They are nice castings, based on Mongols.

Hi Simon
DeleteThanks for the offer but I think I'll pass.
I am looking at TAG now, they do look good but the "large size" comments online have been putting me off a bit. I do like the look of Steve Barber but have yet to see any in apart from on the website
No probs. Steve Barber has a reputation for being small, so maybe a sample? I felt some of the GB Timurid sculpting looked a bit ropey.
DeleteVendel came up with some very nice Parthian horse archers that would mix with Perry sytle, I'd imagine. Might be convertible to Mongols?
Cheers, Simon
Cheers Simon
DeleteI agree that the GB sculpts don't look the best sometimes they do work out better in real life. I think they may have a "proper" Mongol range due soon. Musketeer also could work, and have some nice sculpts, but I am wondering if the EBOB cav would fit with the Perry suljuks size wise
I found Steve Barbers ACW fine so am wondering if it worth a punt, especially given their Mongol army deal, seems to work out pretty good value.
Maybe you could use all-Perry horses, for consistency, and a mixture of riders from other ranges?
DeleteI've never seen a steppe-pony that I've been entirely happy with. They should be short-legged and plump, all too often look like thoroughbreds.
That could work.
DeleteOne thig that the Barber range does have s that they do look like they are riding ponies.
@Craig C have you seen these ?

LES
Thank for the link Les, had a look. I got some of their 15mm ranges a few years back and wasn't overly happy with them
ReplyDeleteIt will be good to have the Mongols present come Southcon. The whole event should be quite a spectacle.
ReplyDeleteAgreed, but have to buy them and paint them. Not 100% happy with any ranges entirely but think I'll get some EBoB for the medium cav.
Delete...and maybe 400 points at Tagcon would work.
ReplyDeleteWe'd probably go for an armies and enemies of Imperial Rome or the Crusades theme
DeleteI am warming to an impetvs comp, or at least day, at TAGCON...
