Ancient Spanish & Carthaginians

I started these guys last year but stopped when Kent started his Carthaginian army but decided it was tTime to get them finished. They are all Crusader Miniatures. I have a bit of mixed feeling towards Crusader, I have quite a few of their figures but overall I really don't like the "Crusader faces", they have a certain style which is a bit lantern jawed for my liking. Also, the spears seem to fall off far too frequently (although that is probably my fault) in fact I lost one while getting these guys out of their box for the photo shoot. However, that being said they are quite nice figures.

Carthaginian Cavalry.

Ancient Spanish Scutarii.  The plan as to make a Spanish command as part of the Carthaginian army and eventually grow it onto a small Ancient Spanish army. I was a bit iffy about the bright shields until they were based up but now I quite like them. I've another two stands to do.

Spanish cavalry. I suck at painting shields but decided to have another go last night (based on some designs by MacPhee's Miniature Men) and as pleasantly surprised (and happy) with the results.

 The Ancient Spanish army assembled.
Terrain. The ruin i picked up last year and just made a couple of test pieces of scatter rocks the other day- they turned out pretty good.

  1. I'm about to start a Spanish army......all Crusader, looking forward to painting them ( I think ) I've never touched any of their range before but they look promising. Good job on these btw.

  2. The figures paint up well Tarty and are well sculpted, its just there is the odd bug eyed individual that should be in the Flintstones in some of the rang (the Irish range has a few IIRC). I am contemplating getting a few of their Celtiberan range at some point.

    1. "The Celtiberians look very nice", he says gazing through the blister packs ( yes this is about as far as I've got ). LBM don't do transfers for them though ?? was wondering what other range might be compatible for size.....

    2. I was looking at the Celtiberians last night thinking they do look good and would make a nice second command for the Spanish. Am trying to resist the temptation for the next wee while though.

I guess Gripping beast (if they do Celtiberians)- I'v mixed Crusader and GB in my Dark Ages armies quite successfully in the past.

  3. Looking good. I'm just starting Spanish shields now and I *hate* doing shield patterns Your ones look very good, but I fear I won't be able to match your standards! Will look forward to seeing how the rest of your army turns out.

    Cheers,
    Aaron

    1. Cheers Rodger.

Kent now has 16 Battalions done for ACW so next week we'll be testing out BP ACW with 16 battalions per side. Should be quite a spectacle.

  5. I know what you mean about Crusader, but they look very nice, and what else is a man to do for Ancient Spanish, since the demise of Companion?

    Cheers, Simon

    1. Thanks Simon. Its a minor fault and the figures do paint up well. The limited figures in packs (4) also makes it hard for some armies to look varied enough.

I've been eying up your Zama Numidians again and am temped to finish off that little project of mine. Foundry now have get 3 blisters the same and get a fourth free which puts them comparable to Crusader so I am very, very tempted although I' not bought a Foundary figure in my life as I've always felt they were way over priced.
