To date we've not really given EW a try, none of the guys have EW armies so we tend to play Mid War (our preferred era) or LW. Truth be told though, we play very little Flames these days and comps are probably where I get most of the games. Still Dale and Nigel both have British Mid War desert tank compnaies that can easily be morphed for EW- Dale has the remnants of his infamous Stuart horde of a decade ago (32 Stuarts was enough for us to ban multiple companies in our standard games). So I've decided to look into DAK options.
I've had a few EW blisters lying round for far to long so have started to work on a few bits and pieces. I hope to get the guys together soon for a few 1100pt doubles games.
I'm keen to try and run a kradschutzen kompanie (motorcycle infantry) so have ordered some motorcycles. I had one blister of DAK motorbikes lying round to get the project started. I intend to have 2 platoons worth as the core of my company which will be run supporting a panzer company. I must admt of am a fan of smaller points size and doubles or even triples games of FoW, the support options become a lot more limited and the forces actually better represent companies than the larger points totals do. So I am looking at running something like this:
Kradschützenkompanie 1100pt DAK Kradschutzen |
German Early-War | |
Mechanised Company |
Platoon | Qty | Unit | Points
Headquarters | |||||
| 2 | Cmd Motorcycle SMG team | 65 | ||

My British have also had a bit of tidying up. I finally completed a platoon of 2pdr portees (not sure how long I've had the blisters lying round)
And a couple of Breda portees- I am tempted to run a motorised infantry company (Jock Column) to be able to run these.
My 25 pdrs have also had a bit of a facelift. A quick repaint and drybrush.
Today I've been tidying up a mittlre panzerkompanie (4x panzer IVs, 5x panzer IIs, 2x 8rads and air support) which will be used to support the kradschutzen.
I also scrounged up another mortar team to make a platoon of 4 as part of the kradschutzen's support.
I've come up with this to test out:
Mittlere Panzerkompanie Medium Armoured Company |
German Early-War | |
Tank Company |
Platoon | Qty | Unit | Points
Headquarters | |||||
| 1 | Panzer IV D | 150 | ||
Combat Platoons | |||||

| 2 | Sd Kfz 231 (8-rad) | 95 | ||
| 5 | Limited Air Support Ju 87B Stuka | 115 | ||

Finally today I made some pinned markers for Bolt Action.
So overall, I've been fairly productive.
Craig
An impressive collection!
ReplyDeleteGood idea for the pinned markers too.
Thanks Boggler- the war in the desert is one of my favourite theatres alas we just don't seem to play that many desert games any more,.
DeleteVery very nice Craig. The pinned markers are a great idea. Might have to steal that one!!
ReplyDeleteThanks Rodger, been meaning to make some pinned markers for a while now. Toothpicks and & spare FoW small bases.Will probably add some static grass as well.
DeleteI've been knocking around ideas in my head as well. I may try to run Autosaharianas paired with a German Panzer Kompanie. Or with motorcycles troops as well. (We may see a bunch of these!)
ReplyDeleteOf course I might switch to OSS at the last minute;-)
Autosharianas would be cool! Don't discount the carri company as support either. Unlike the Germans you an get a decent number of hulls and 1-2 artillery batteries for smoke etc
DeleteNice looking battle groups.
ReplyDeleteThanks Dean
DeleteCrazy timing...
DeleteYou announce we are doing EW and the Greece campaign and I get a box of random stuff delivered from my late Granmas house...
In the box was two original small paper booklets from the NZ war office in 1943,
one on the Campaign of the 2ndEF in Greece and the other the Campaign in Tunisia.
Pretty chuffed, good score!!
I prefer your british force, they look really gd, and its infantry, perfect for Greece :D
Hopefully I can make it again, had an awesome time at DoD, thanks Craig
You and Jason looked like you had a lot of fun. Was one of the best DoD yet :)
ReplyDeleteI think we'll open it up to Med '41 rather than just Greece.
Those booklets sound awesome!
Hope to get some EW games in next week.
LRDG all basecoated.. somehow unless fow hav a list i wont be taking them and probs run german armour anyway.. got some gd painting tips.
ReplyDeleteMed 41 it is. Hopefully i can make it :)
There is a list in Burning Empires apparently. I'm doing my German armour the colours in the book (ochre-brown?) and a heavy dry brush of Iraqi sand. Pretty simple but loos pretty good.
