ACW Basing

I am a little concerned about how to base, most people are going for 5cm bases, but I do like the look of the 6cm widths. Tonight I painted, and based, 4 stands with 4 figures per stand to compare them with last nights effort.

As you can see the 3 bases have 5 figures (or 6) and the unit has a frontage of 18cm-  (9 figs in the front rank so 2cm per figure). The new unit has 8 figures per rank and frontage of 20cm (2.5 cm per figure).

So which looks better?

I a now out of Confederate infantry  to paint having demolished a box of Perry plastics in two nights- not a bad effort that! At this rate I might even be able to challenge Kent's painting output, at least for 24 hrs!

  1. To be honest, aesthetically, I find there's little to choose between the two systems. Both look very good with these figures. I'd probably go the 3x6cm stand way in the interests of conserving table space, always a consideration, for mine.

  2. They both look great and when i get around to doing mine i'll base them the same as yours so you better not change your mind when you finally decide what to do, And i'll post a couple of pics of my weeks work tonight.

    1. Will let you know Kent- I think 4 bases with 4-5 figs firing or charging would look good- I just don't like the marching pose with fewer (4) figs

  3. Wow, 36 figures in two nights!!! Very impressive!
Must admit I have generally gone with a conventional 20mm frontage for most of my such multi-based units.

  4. I was checking your out last night Scott as I was surfing round looking for inspiration.

More synamic bases would look good with 4-5 bases I think but the martching pose looks a bit sparse to me

  5. maybe dont "square" the figs up on the base, move them around abit so they are in different places?

    1. I wanted the marching guys marching- they are growing on me though. Mainly as I prefer 4 bases per unit. I might try that idea though.

The firing line guys I'm happy with and think they'd look good on the smaller bases too. Either way I think 4 bases for a regiment/unit is the way to go.
